Writing
Magazine Articles: Interested in interviewing and writing about a PI’s research? Ready to stick to deadlines? Write an article! These articles are published in our print issue each semester. Articles go through several rounds of drafts and edits throughout September and October before the magazine is officially printed in December. The hard deadline for article topic submission is September 19th @ 11:59 pm.
Blog Posts: Interested in writing about research done by a PI/post-doc/grad/undergrad student (not just a PI)? Need more flexible deadlines or less requirements than article writing? Write a blog! Blogs are shorter versions of articles that go on our website (see the “Online Articles” tab under “Read”), instead of our physical magazine. Blogs are a vital part of keeping our readers engaged throughout the semester as we work on the print issue. Please contact carolinascientific@gmail.com with the subject “Website Content” if interested! The soft deadline for blog topic submission is September 19th @ 11:59 pm.
Undergrad Research Chronicles: Do you want to write about your own research experience as an undergrad? Consider writing a post for our website! Visit “Undergrad Research Chronicles” under the “Read” tab for examples. You can write about how you got involved in research, tell our readers about what you do, take us along a day in your life—whatever you would like! Please contact carolinascientific@gmail.com with the subject line “Website Content” if interested.
Copy Editing
Our awesome copy editors review between 1 and 3 articles (your choice!) for grammatical errors. The majority of their work is done online through 2 rounds of edits mid-semester. The required interest meeting for this team is TBD and will be announced via email in October. Please contact our Copy Editor Chair, Ana Barton (mabarton@unc.edu), with questions or if interested.
Design and Illustration
The Design team uses Adobe InDesign software to develop the layout for our print magazine! Our incredible designers each format around 2-4 articles on a flexible timeline. There is no experience necessary—please consider joining if you want to develop design publishing skills! The required interest meeting for this team is TBD and will likely occur sometime in October. Contact our Design Chair, Neha Panda (nehap2@unc.edu), with questions and join the GroupMe (tinyurl.com/designF25).
